Because what goes into your home matters—especially with little ones underfoot.

At Lane Brooks Homes, we’ve always believed that your home should not only be beautiful—it should feel safe, comfortable, and intentional. As a family-owned business (with three young kids of our own!), we know firsthand how important it is to create spaces that support healthy living.

That’s why we’re always happy to incorporate non-toxic and low-VOC materials into our projects. Whether you’re renovating your forever home or just updating one room, small swaps can make a big impact when it comes to your family’s well-being.

Here are a few of our go-to non-toxic materials that we love to use in family-friendly builds:

ree

🌿 1. Low-VOC or Zero-VOC Paint

Conventional paints often contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can off-gas for weeks—sometimes longer. We prefer brands like:

Benjamin Moore Natura

ECOS Paints

Sherwin-Williams Harmony

These paints offer beautiful finishes without the harmful fumes, making them safer during and after your renovation—especially around kids and babies.

🌱 2. Natural Wood & FSC-Certified Lumber

When possible, we love using solid hardwood or FSC-certified wood, which ensures the wood was sustainably harvested and not treated with harsh chemicals. We also avoid particle board or MDF when we can, as they often contain formaldehyde-based adhesives.

For custom built-ins, shelving, and trim work, natural wood not only looks better—it ages better, too.

🌾 3. Flooring That’s Free From Harsh Chemicals

Flooring can make a big difference in air quality. We’ve worked with brands like Flooret, Cali Bamboo, and Stuga that offer durable, stylish, and low-emission options that are safe for crawling babies and barefoot toddlers.

Look for labels like:

FloorScore® Certified

Greenguard Gold

Phthalate-Free

We also love tile in high-traffic areas for easy cleaning and longevity without compromising on health.

🪵 4. Non-Toxic Adhesives, Caulks & Sealants

It’s easy to forget about the small stuff—but things like adhesives and sealants can off-gas harmful chemicals long after a project is finished. We strive to choose low-VOC or no-VOC options to minimize exposure wherever possible.

🍃 5. Natural Materials Whenever Possible

In both finishes and styling, we lean toward natural fibers and materials:

• Cotton or linen window treatments

• Jute, wool, or cotton rugs

• Natural stone countertops or backsplashes

• Untreated or minimally finished wood

These elements bring warmth, texture, and a sense of calm—without adding harsh chemicals into your space.

Why It Matters

You don’t have to overhaul everything to make a difference. Even just choosing non-toxic paint or cleaner flooring can help create a safer environment—especially for growing families, children with allergies, or anyone looking to support a more natural lifestyle.

We’re not perfect, and every project is different, but we always aim to build with intention. If a client shares that health and non-toxic living are a priority, we’re all in. We believe in designing spaces that are just as safe and comforting as they are beautiful.

Planning a renovation and want to explore non-toxic options?

We’d love to work with you. Let us know your priorities, and we’ll help bring your vision to life—safely, beautifully, and with your family in mind.
